In the Palace of Nezahualcoyotlby Eduardo de J. Douglas,English | ISBN: 0292721684 | 2010 | PDF | 288 pages | 9,96 mbAround 1542, descendants of the Aztec rulers of Mexico created accounts of the pre-Hispanic history of the city of Tetzcoco, Mexico, one of the imperial capitals of the Aztec Empire. Painted in iconic script ("picture writing"), the Codex Xolotl, the Quinatzin Map, and the Tlohtzin Map appear to retain and emphasize both pre-Hispanic content and also pre-Hispanic form, despite being produced almost a generation after the Aztecs surrendered to Hernán Cortés in 1521. Yet, as this pioneering study makes plain, the reality is far more complex.

Algorithmic Lie Theory for Solving Ordinary Differential Equationsby Fritz Schwarz2008 | ISBN: 158488889X | 448 pages | PDF | 3 MBDespite the fact that Sophus Lie's theory was virtually the only systematic method for solving nonlinear ordinary differential equations (ODEs), it was rarely used for practical problems because of the massive amount of calculations involved. But with the advent of computer algebra programs, it became possible to apply Lie theory to concrete problems. Taking this approach, Algorithmic Lie Theory for Solving Ordinary Differential Equations serves as a valuable introduction for solving differential equations using Lie's theory and related results. After an introductory chapter, the book provides the mathematical foundation of linear differential equations, covering Loewy's theory and Janet bases. The following chapters present results from the theory of continuous groups of a 2-D manifold and discuss the close relation between Lie's symmetry analysis and the equivalence problem. The core chapters of the book identify the symmetry classes to which quasilinear equations of order two or three belong and transform these equations to canonical form. The final chapters solve the canonical equations and produce the general solutions whenever possible as well as provide concluding remarks. The appendices contain solutions to selected exercises, useful formulae, properties of ideals of monomials, Loewy decompositions, symmetries for equations from Kamke's collection, and a brief description of the software system ALLTYPES for solving concrete algebraic problems.

The Continuing Evolution of Europe2011 | ISBN-10: 0262017016 | PDF | 184 pages | 3 MBThe European Union began with efforts in the Cold War era to foster economic integration among a few Western European countries. Today's EU constitutes an upper tier of government that affects almost every level of policymaking in each of its twenty-seven member states. The recent financial and economic crises have tested this still-evolving institutional framework, and this book surveys key economic challenges faced by the EU. Prominent European economists examine such topics as the stability of the financial markets and possible policy options to reduce future vulnerability to crises, including Glass-Steagull-style narrow banking; the effect of emerging economies such as China and India on Europe's economic position; the protection of national interests in industrial policy; reforming and preserving the welfare state in the face of unemployment, population aging, and worker mobility within the EU; and improving the EU's institutional framework by reassigning responsibilities among supranational, national, and local governments. Among the conclusions that emerge from these analyses are the necessity for banking regulation as well as budgetary discipline; the need to consider global as well as European integration; and the idea that an environment that fosters internal competition will increase Europe's competitiveness internationally.

Glendenning, "After The Beginning: A Cosmic Journey Through Space And Time" English | ISBN: 1860944477 | 2004 | PDF | 228 pages | 8,14 mbIn a brilliant flash about fourteen billion years ago, time and matter were born in a single instant of creation. An immensely hot and dense universe began its rapid expansion everywhere, creating space where there was no space and time where there was no time. In the intense fire just after the beginning, the lightest elements were forged, later to form primordial clouds that eventually evolved into galaxies, stars, and planets. This evolution is the story told in this fascinating book. Interwoven with the storyline are short pieces on the pioneering men and women who revealed those wonders to us.

Alpha C. Chiang, "Elements of Dynamic Optimization" English | 1999-12-23 | ISBN: 157766096X | 327 pages | PDF | 12.3 mbIn this volume Dr. Chiang introduces readers to the most important methods of dynamic optimization used in economics. The classical calculus of variations, optimal control theory, and dynamic programming in its discrete form are explained in the usual Chiang fashion with patience and thoroughness. The economic examples, selected from both classical and recent literature, serve not only to illustrate applications of the mathematical methods, but also to provide a useful glimpse of the development of thinking in several areas of economics. Outstanding features include: (1) written with clarity and a comparable level of expository patience; (2) reinforces discussions of mathematical techniques with numerical illustrations, economic examples, and exercise problems; (3) presents a simple problem with a well known solution in several different alternative formulations in the numerical illustrations; and (4) explains economic models in a step-by-step manner (from the initial construction through the intricacies of mathematical analysis to its final solution).
Melanie Frappier, "Analysis and Interpretation in the Exact Sciences" English | ISBN: 9400725817 | 2012 | 279 pages | PDF | 3 MBThe essays in this volume concern the points of intersection between analytic philosophy and the philosophy of the exact sciences. More precisely, it concern connections between knowledge in mathematics and the exact sciences, on the one hand, and the conceptual foundations of knowledge in general. Its guiding idea is that, in contemporary philosophy of science, there are profound problems of theoretical interpretation-- problems that transcend both the methodological concerns of general philosophy of science, and the technical concerns of philosophers of particular sciences.

Austro-Hungarian Battleships 1914-1918English | 50 Pages | PDF | 3 MBAustria-Hungary did not have an overseas empire; its empire lay within its own boundaries and the primary purpose of its navy until the beginning of the twentieth century was the defense of its coastline. As its merchant marine dramatically grew, admirals believed that the navy should take a more proactive policy of defense. The 1890s saw the beginning of a series of naval building programs that would create a well-balanced modern fleet. Cruisers were constructed for the protection of overseas trade and for ìshowing the flagî but the decisive projection of Austria-Hungaryís commitment to control the Adriatic was the construction of a force of modern battleships. Despite the naval arms race throughout Europe at the time, the navy had difficulty obtaining funds for new ships. The difficulties experienced in battleship funding and construction mirrored the political difficulties and ethnic rivalries within the empire. Nevertheless by August of 1914, the Austro-Hungarian had a fleet of battleships. This book details the five classes of Austro-Hungarian battleships in service during World War I.

Tyranny and Political Culture in Ancient Greece by James F. McGlewEnglish | 1996 | ISBN: 0801483875 | 240 pages | PDF | 36.2 MBMcGlew's work is divided into six chapters which trace the genesis, decease and aftermath of Archaic tyranny through this "language of representation." In "Tyrannus fulminatus: Power and Praise," McGlew, on the basis of a Flavian age declamatio, argues for a perceived Greek polarity between founders and tyrants and "the (post-tyrannical) city's mastery over their stories, both of which are basic to a polis's political identity and its conceptions of sovereignty" Chapter Two, "Justice and Power: The Language of Early Greek Tyranny," focusses on dike and its implication with rulers from Homer. Having no real concern for dike, Homeric kings were self-absorbed with honor and vengeance; leaders contemporary with Homer and Hesiod, on the other hand, were responsible for the community's welfare, most especially the preservation of justice. When these were deemed to have perverted justice, a way was opened for tyranny. In "The Lawgiver's Struggle with Tyranny: Solon and the Excluded Middle," McGlew argues that Solon, who diagnosed tyranny's causation and aimed to inure the Athenian polity, sought to preempt the tyrant's claim to possess sole authority to correct injustice and thus to short-circuit the process by inserting first himself, then the adamant rule of law. Solon's reforms failed because the Athenians rejected his solution, opting instead for the autocratic correction of Peisistratos. Chapter Four, "Master and Slave: The Fall of Tyranny," attempts to demonstrate that later Archaic tyrants dissembled for their constituents, striving to survive in a changing political environment. In "Narratives and Autonomy: Greek Founders" we learn that foundation stories, invented for the most part, helped secure the polis' political existence. Finally, in "Lovers of the City: Tyranny and Democracy in Classical Athens," McGlew argues that tyranny's freedom functioned at Athens as a conceptual model for the idea of citizenship.
Cumberlandís Culloden Army 1745-46English | 50 Pages | PDF | 3,3 MBIn August 1745 Charles Edward Stuart, the 'Young Pretender', landed in Scotland and sparked the Second Jacobite Rising. The Jacobite forces seized Perth, then Edinburgh, where they proclaimed the Young Pretender's father King James VIII; they trounced their Hanoverian opponents at Prestonpans and crossed into England, getting as far south as Derby before withdrawing into Scotland. Far from universally popular north of the border, the Jacobite army bested another Hanoverian army at Falkirk and besieged Stirling, only to be routed by the Duke of Cumberland's army at Culloden in April 1746, a crushing defeat that ended any prospect of a Stuart restoration.

The Cult of Divine Birth in Ancient Greece by Marguerite RigogliosoEnglish | 2009 | ISBN: 0230614779 | 294 pages | PDF | 1.93 MBGreek religion is filled with strange sexual artifacts––stories of mortal women's couplings with gods, rituals like the basilinna's “marriage” to Dionysus, beliefs in the impregnating power of snakes and deities, and more. In this provocative study, Marguerite Rigoglioso suggests these are remnants of an early Greek cult of divine birth, not unlike that of Egypt. Scouring myth, legend, and history from a female-oriented perspective, she argues that many in the highest echelons of Greek civilization believed non-ordinary conception was the only means possible of bringing forth true leaders, and that special virgin priestesshoods were dedicated to this practice. Her book adds a unique perspective to our understanding of antiquity, and has significant implications for the study of Christianity and other religions in which divine birth claims are central.
